2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Review

When you get behind the wheel of a new designed Sport Trac, you are going to get the feeling that you are sitting in a Ford Explorer SUV until you turn around to check the back seat. The Sport Trac is essentially the Explorer with the rear cut off and a pick up truck bed added. Ford calls this configuration a Sport Utility Truck. The Sport Trac offers both a V6 and V8 engine for 2007. The V8 is a 281 cubic inch SOHC monster with 3 valves per cylinder and an output of 292 horse power. The V8 can handle a maximum payload of 1400 pounds. Of course, there is both 4 wheel and 2 wheel drive packages. The Explorer has suffered from poor resale value in the two wheel drive version, and the Sport Trac is sure to follow suit there. A four wheel drive really makes more sense in a “Sport Utility” vehicle anyway.

The 2007 has been overhauled almost from the ground up. One feature is an innovative cargo box that has three different storage bins each with a drain plug. The fuel tank capacity is 22 gallons and you are going to be glad of that because the Sport Trac like the its SUV brother, the Explorer, are new real easy on gas. The Sport Trac gets around 14 mpg in the city. This fact has hurt sales of the Sport Trac and the Explorer both last year due to worry about those rising gas prices.

If you are worried about gas prices, it might be a good idea to stay away from the Sport Trac, and certainly avoid road tests. The Sport Trac handles very well for a pickup truck. It is crammed with some really nice options inside its roomy passenger cabin, and it has the look of a luxury vehicle. The big problem is that there is going to be a real good chance that you are going to want to keep it. Ford has put a lot of engineering into this vehicle for 2007, and it shows.
