2007 Cadillac Escalade EXT Review

Here is a vehicle with an identity crisis. Is it an SUV? Is it a pick up truck? Is it a luxury vehicle? The truth is that it is a little of all three rolled into one package. In fact, Cadillac refers to the Escalade EXT as a Sport Utility Truck. It is powered by the Vortec 6.2 liter V8 engine that puts out 403 horse power @ 5700 RPM. When coupled with its six speed automatic transmission with overdrive, this power unit is what you might call a “ticket getter.”  It is capable of a payload of 1,362 pounds, but the truck bed is rather small, but this is not the obvious choice for a work truck anyway. That is not to say that this truck is not capable of work. It can tow up to 7,200 pounds, and it unique crew cab design allows access to the interior through the truck bed. When the back seats are folded down, long items can be stowed in the bed and protected from the elements. The crew cab design comfortably seats five passengers.

It is in the area of luxury that the Escalade EXT stands out. The list of standard features, and options is almost endless. It starts with a Bose 5.1 Discrete Surround Sound system with am/fm stereo, a six disc CD changer/MP3/DVD player in dash. XM Satellite radio is available, as is a GPS navigation system that is state of the art. On Star is standard equipment. The rearview mirror is auto-dimming with an eight point compass and outside temperature indicator. It is far beyond the scope of this review to list every single luxury feature, but suffice it to say, it would take some serious reading time to cover them all. It is truly more Cadillac than it is truck.

The gas tank holds 31 gallons, and even with a rather low MPG rating of 13 city and 19 highway, you can cruise a long way between fill ups. It is hard to find any other negatives. Of course, it is going to be Cadillac expensive, and some testers complain of a little more interior noise than you would expect from such a well appointed vehicle. Overall, you are going to pay quite a bit for this one, but in return you are going to get a whole load of truck in return.
